If your cats eat chocolate it can be toxic to them. Therefore, you should never feed your cat anything containing chocolate, even as a treat. This includes chocolate mousse. The severity of chocolate poisoning varies depending on the cat and its age. Chocolate poisoning is more serious for kittens compared to adult cats.
Can cats eat chocolate?
While chocolate is a favorite for most humans, it can be lethal for cats. Luckily, most cats won’t eat chocolate on their own. However, they can be coaxed to ingest it by their owners, thinking they are offering their cats a treat. Chocolate contains a toxic agent known as theobromine, which is present in all types of chocolate, including white chocolate. This toxic agent can cause tremors, seizures, abnormal heart rhythm, and even death in cats.
Can cats eat ice cream?
Cats can eat ice cream but in small quantities. It is safe for them to lick your spoon after you are finished with your ice cream. However, you shouldn’t offer them large quantities of ice cream. Most cats are lactose intolerant and too much ice cream can cause severe stomach upset, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Ice cream also contains artificial sweeteners which are safe in small quantities. In large quantities, however, they may pose health issues for your feline friend. It is important to remember that cats do not have any sweet taste receptors, and thus won’t appreciate the sweet taste of ice cream.
If the ice cream has any chocolate flavoring, you should avoid giving it to your cat completely. This is because chocolate is poisonous to cats and can be lethal even in small quantities.
How much chocolate is toxic to cats?
The toxicity of chocolate to cats depends on the type of chocolate. Baking chocolate is the most dangerous to cats, with as little as 0.2 oz being toxic. Only a small 0.5 oz of semisweet or dark chocolate needs to be bitten off a bar for it to be toxic to your cat.
White and milk chocolate contains less theobromine and caffeine compared to other chocolate varieties. However, only 1.1 oz is enough to reach toxic levels for your feline friend.
What happens if cats eat chocolate?
Chocolate contains caffeine and a toxic agent known as theobromine. Both of these components are toxic and even fatal to cats when consumed in large quantities. Humans are able to absorb theobromine quicker than cats.
As such, even small quantities of chocolate can be toxic, especially to kittens and small cats. Caffeine, on the other hand, is a stimulant that has more severe effects on cats than it has on humans since cats are more sensitive to it.
Chocolate toxicity causes a variety of symptoms in cats, including death, if the cat does not receive the proper attention immediately. Cats have different levels of sensitivity to caffeine and theobromine. For this reason, it is important to contact your doctor immediately when your cat eats chocolate, even if you don’t think it was very much.
Your cat will start exhibiting the symptoms of chocolate toxicity even after consuming small amounts of chocolate. Initially, your cat will start exhibiting symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea accompanied by hyperactivity.
If not treated, there will be restlessness, increased thirst, tremors, among other signs of sensitivity. If your cat has consumed large amounts of chocolate and the treatment isn’t immediate, your cat may suffer from stiffness, rapid breathing, seizures, and may even die.
Will a tiny bit of chocolate hurt my cat?
You should avoid feeding chocolate to your cat at all costs, even if it is in small amounts. Any amount of chocolate is too much for your cat. Chocolate in all its forms is lethal to your furry friend. This includes dry baking chocolate, which is the most toxic due to its high level of theobromine. Other types such as cocoa powder, dark, semi-sweet, white chocolate, and milk chocolate are also toxic.
What to give to a cat that ate chocolate?
If your cat has eaten chocolate and is at risk of chocolate toxicity, you should immediately contact the vet. Your veterinarian will recommend that you induce vomiting before taking your cat to the vet. One or two teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide is used to induce vomiting in cats. If your cat has recently eaten the chocolate, then the vomiting will get rid of the chocolate that may have been consumed.
Getting your cat to drink hydrogen peroxide may prove to be challenging especially if you don’t have a syringe at home. If this is the case, then you should then take your cat to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
Once you take your cat to the veterinarian, your cat will be put on fluid therapy to keep her hydrated. The vet will also need to perform urine and blood tests to see the severity of the poisoning. An ECG may also be performed to monitor the rhythms of the heart. The symptoms will be treated as needed. A bland diet is recommended for the days following the treatment.
If your cat does not receive treatment promptly after eating chocolate, the cat may die if enough theobromine was consumed.
